The Dynamics and Nesting Working Group deals with the engine of the atmospheric model, the dynamical core which drives the atmospheric circulations that make up the Earth’s weather. We call this the dynamical core because of the complex mathematics and numerics form the core around which the rest of the numerical weather prediction model is built. The UFS is based on the Finite Volume on a Cubed Sphere (FV3) dynamical core, which was jointly developed by NOAA and NASA. This advanced software also permits high-resolution “nests” embedded in the global model. These nests are like a model within a model that allow us to better resolve and predict high-impact weather events such as hurricanes.
